Replicating the appearance of natural stone on various substrates

Multicolour paints are an advanced coating solution designed to replicate the appearance of natural stones, such as granite. They create a visually appealing, multi-tonal effect by incorporating colour droplets dispersed in a protective colloid solution. Unlike traditional stone-based materials, multicolour paints reduce the need for quarrying and transportation. Their composition ensures easy application on a wide range of substrates, including walls, furniture, wood, concrete, metal, and plastic, with superior durability, scratch resistance, and water resistance when paired with a suitable topcoat.

The formulation of multicolour paints involves several key components, each playing a critical role in stability, application, and final appearance. They need to be optimised for the multicolour paint process, which consists of the base paint, the colour mixture, the protective colloid solution (PCS), and the disperse phase (coloured mixture) that can be applied or mixed in a continuous phase.

Benefits:

Multicolor paint technology offers a combination of aesthetic and functional advantages, making it a preferred solution in decorative coatings:

  • Realistic aesthetic appeal: Provides a natural stone-like finish with enhanced depth and texture, allowing for high-end decorative effects.
  • Cost-effectiveness: Achieves premium looks at a fraction of the cost of real stone materials, reducing material and labour expenses.
  • Reduced need for quarrying: Reduces stone extraction and transportation needs.
  • Easy application and adaptability: Can be applied directly with HVLP (High Volume Low Pressure) spray techniques, ensuring ease of use across different substrates.
  • Durability and performance: Resists scratches, water, and UV degradation, outperforming traditional decorative coatings in longevity and maintenance.

Key materials:

  • Pure acrylic binders: with low Minimum Film Formation Temperature (MFFT)
  • Protective colloid solution (PCS): Stabilizes the dispersed colour droplets by forming a thin gel layer around them, ensuring colour separation during application.
  • Glycol free pigment concentrate: With optimized wetting and dispersing agents prevent aggregation and enhance colour stability.
  • Rheology modifiers and additives: Synthetic and natural smectite, neutralizing amines, and defoamers optimize viscosity, storage stability, and application properties.
